Bouncing Back

Asking for Help through Life's Setbacks

Life happens whether we are ready for it or not, and in May 2005, my mom passed away after an extended illness. I'm not sure we are ever really prepared to lose a parent, especially Mom, who has loved and nurtured us all of our lives. I had more things I needed to talk with her about, and I know I wasn't ready to let her go.

Less than one month later, my husband fell from a ladder, suffered a head injury, and died a week later.  My husband was not only my life partner but my business partner, and there I was left to run our business and my life alone.

After getting through the initial shock of losing the two people who had the greatest impact on my life, I started to pick up the pieces with the help and strength provided by family, friends, and business associates.

I quickly learned that asking for help was the only way I would survive the grief and keep my business and my home intact. I'd often find myself looking around in a daze, feeling overwhelmed because my challenges seemed so great.

Learning to put my ego aside and ask for the help I needed was a huge accomplishment. I discovered that people really wanted to help, but they didn't know how. My request opened the door for them to give the support they wanted to share.

Will you actively live today or just bustle through it?  I suspect you are going to do your best!  Why?  Because of who you are and who you aspire to be.  I know you will be kind and thoughtful to all you encounter and if not, you will reflect at the end of the day and commit to trying again tomorrow.

Don't be too hard on yourself if you don't get everything right.  Why?  Because no one does, not even 80% of the time.  At least no one I know.  Some are close but we are human and we need to always practice until we have mastered the skill we want.

Try

Get back up and try again.  You can do it, no matter what the challenge is.  Think.  Think again.  Ask for help if you need it.  If you can't get help, think of what YOU can do to cope with your situation until it changes.  It's up to you - make the effort, one more time.

Reaction

Your choice, again.  How we react to any situation is always up to us.  And yes, there are a lot of lessons to learn - some more than once. So if a test comes today, what will you choose?  An optimistic outlook or one of doom and gloom?  Might not be easy, no doubt, so prepare yourself as best you can and keep your mind focused on moving forward.

Words

Words have power. They are the building blocks and make up ideas and actions. Thoughts make up words as words make up thoughts. Writing is an art form to get idea's out. It cultivates and helps our minds express what ww need to say.
